History and description
Also known as the Royal Palace, the Palazzo dei Normanni in Palermo is one of the oldest palaces in Europe. Built around the 9th century by the Byzantines, the building was later expanded by the Normans, who transformed it into the official royal residence. Over time, it underwent further modifications under the rule of the Swabian, Angevin, and Aragonese kings, to the point of becoming a symbol of political and cultural power—a role it still holds today as the seat of the Sicilian Parliament. From a monumental perspective, the palace is especially renowned for the Palatine Chapel, a masterpiece of Norman-Byzantine art characterized by its splendid mosaics, though inside you will also find courtyards, gardens, and numerous historic rooms such as the Hall of Hercules.
Curiosity
The palace’s extraordinary beauty has made it the set for numerous films, most notably The Leopard, directed by Luchino Visconti in 1963.
