Green Monuments in Genoa: a route through historic trees and urban identity

Genoa has introduced a new urban route focused on monumental trees, designed to highlight the city's green heritage and the stories these trees embody. The initiative spotlights specimens chosen for their age, size or historical significance, turning them into points of interest for residents and tourists alike.

Organised in collaboration with local associations, the project makes each tree identifiable through informational panels and dedicated signage, and can be explored independently or via guided walks that will be scheduled soon.

What the route includes

The itinerary consists of 26 stops spread across the historic centre and surrounding neighbourhoods. Featured species include fig, jacaranda, hackberry, magnolia, ginkgo biloba, linden and carob.

  • Piazza Portoria: magnolias and cycads welcome visitors in a square with notable historical ties.
  • Largo XII Ottobre: an ornamental pear in an elegant area close to Via XX Settembre.
  • Piazza Dante: an olive tree near the House of Christopher Columbus and the Porta Soprana towers.
  • Via San Vincenzo: avocado and chestnut trees among liberty-style architecture and medieval glimpses.
  • Sarzano: false rosewood, hackberry and carob around the medieval square dominated by the church.
  • Piazza Caricamento: fig and date palm overlooking the Old Port.
  • Piazza Lavagna: an ornamental plum in one of the characteristic alleys of the old town.
  • Piazza Corvetto: a concentration of monumental trees set against historic buildings.
  • Via Bertani: the Constantinople hazel close to city villas and museums.

Practical information

The route is intended for a leisurely pace, with short stops to read panels and appreciate each specimen. Guided visits will be organised in the coming weeks: check announcements from local groups for dates and booking details.

Visitor tips:

  • Wear comfortable shoes for walking through the historic centre.
  • Bring water and sun protection on warm days.
  • Split the route into multiple stages if you wish to delve into the history and botany of each tree.

This itinerary provides a fresh way to experience Genoa, combining nature and monumental heritage and revealing overlooked corners of the city beyond the usual tourist circuit.
