In the Umbrian hills the village of Montone keeps alive a centuries-old tradition centered on the Holy Thorn, a relic that has attracted pilgrims and visitors since the 15th century. The annual celebration on Easter Monday combines historical reenactment, religious rites and popular events that highlight the town’s heritage.
The relic’s story dates back to 1473, when a thorn from Christ's crown was entrusted to the community and became an object of devotion. Local legend tells of the thorn giving off a sweet fragrance and blooming on Good Friday, drawing worshippers from the region. Over time the devotion evolved into a public celebration featuring liturgy and period pageantry.
The Holy Thorn celebration offers a chance to discover Montone’s historical and religious roots and to take part in a festival that weaves devotion, folklore and spectacle into the atmospheric setting of a well-preserved Umbrian village.
