A Meta‑Museum of Science: Lincei's proposal for a national Research

Autore: Redazione 23/03/2026 14:29

What the Meta‑Museum project is about

The Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei has put forward a plan to create a Research Centre for a Museum of Science (Crmm) conceived as a Meta‑Museum. The centre would connect scientific museums, universities and research institutes through an interoperable digital system to enhance key specimens, support both on-site and remote interactive experiences and provide targeted STEM education.

Core functions of the proposed centre

  • Digital repository to catalogue and publish specimens using open databases, 3D models and APIs.
  • Research hub focused on digital humanities, AI-assisted cataloguing and digital conservation methodologies.
  • Flexible exhibition spaces where physical objects and digital content interact for immersive and educational visits.
  • Training and outreach to stimulate young people’s engagement with STEM fields.
  • International knowledge exchange to integrate Italy’s scientific heritage with global best practices.

Rationale

Scientific collections are increasingly valuable for research on climate change, species distribution, geological processes and the history of science. Historic herbaria, entomological collections, mineral samples and historic instruments yield new insights when studied with modern analytical techniques. Yet in Italy digital efforts are often uneven—localized databases, inconsistent cataloguing standards and limited resources reduce the scientific and educational impact of these holdings.

Operational proposals and collaborators

The plan suggests promoting the Crmm through the Ministry of Culture’s Directorate General for Museums, with structured participation from the Ministry of Education and Merit and the Ministry of University and Research. Technical partners include university digital labs—such as Sapienza’s DigiLab—which can contribute expertise in interoperable architectures, immersive environments and advanced educational platforms. National museum associations and professional networks are expected to support governance and dissemination.

Benefits for museums

  • Increased international visibility for Italian scientific collections.
  • New opportunities for multidisciplinary research and citizen science projects.
  • Access to digital tools for education, virtual tours and digital twins of objects.

Next steps

The proposal will be discussed at a public meeting hosted by the Academy in Rome on April 28. The initiative foresees establishing a national technical committee to set interoperability standards, draw up digitisation guidelines and identify funding paths, including national and European digital transition and heritage valorisation programmes.

Practical tip for museums: begin creating standardized digital inventories with open metadata and seek collaborations with university labs or digital centres to ensure future interoperability.
