MACRO 2026: annual program and exhibition highlights

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome (MACRO) presents its 2026 exhibition program, running from spring through winter with solo exhibitions, research projects and institutional collaborations. Under the artistic direction of Cristiana Perrella, the calendar seeks to broaden international engagement while remaining connected to Rome’s cultural scene.

Practical information

  • Where: MACRO, via Nizza 138, Rome
  • When: 2026 season (April - December)
  • How to get there: Nomentano area; served by buses and Metro B (Policlinico / Castro Pretorio)

Season structure

The program is divided into two main phases: a spring–summer cycle that addresses contemporary themes—such as AI, geopolitics and the overlap between visual arts and literature—and an autumn–winter phase featuring retrospectives, site-specific commissions and new museum commissions.

Highlights and dates

  • Extensions: current exhibitions have been extended, including UNAROMA (open until 3 May 2026) and Abitare le rovine del presente (open until 10 May 2026).
  • 29 April – 30 August: first cycle with key projects, including Hito Steyerl’s "Mechanical Kurds", a video installation examining artificial intelligence and geopolitical scenarios, and an exhibition marking the 80th anniversary of the Premio Strega.
  • 13–15 May: Science Fashion, a series of talks and workshops exploring fashion, science and emerging technologies.
  • 28 May: opening of a solo exhibition by Miriam Cahn, exploring the female body as a political space; around the same time the winners’ exhibition of the Paul Thorel Prize will be on display.
  • September 2026: a retrospective dedicated to Marialba Russo, focusing on her 1970s work and identity themes, with a parallel display at the Museum of Civilizations.
  • Autumn/Winter: a joint show by Francis Upritchard and Martino Gamper featuring site-specific interventions, and a new project by Alessandro Sciarroni for the main hall scheduled for December.

Supporting program and partnerships

Alongside exhibitions, MACRO offers a program of talks, performances, screenings and workshops. Institutional partnerships with bodies such as Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Fondazione Bellonci and the Museum of Civilizations help activate shared projects and diversify use of the museum’s spaces, including areas devoted to video, sound and cinema.

Visitor tips

Check the museum’s official channels for up-to-date information on opening hours, tickets, guided tours and related events. Individual exhibitions may have different calendars and overlapping dates: verify specific schedules before planning your visit.
