History and description
Dating back to 1128 as a watchtower, the structure was equipped with its first lantern in 1326 but took on its current appearance only after the reconstruction of 1543, when it reached, including the rock on which it stands, 117 meters above sea level. Built of Carignano stone, with two square sections and panoramic terraces, the tower has withstood the passing centuries and was later fitted with a lightning rod. It is considered one of the oldest active lighthouses in the world. Inside, a staircase of 365 steps leads upward, though only the first 172 are accessible, allowing visitors to reach the terrace.
Curiosities
Regarded as the tallest lighthouse in the Mediterranean, it is tied to a Genoese legend about its builder, who was allegedly left to die at sea to prevent him from replicating the work elsewhere.
Access
Open to visitors from Friday to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, the lighthouse can be visited at the cost of €8, with reductions and free entry available under specific conditions.
How to reach it
Located in the Sampierdarena district, the lighthouse can be reached via a pedestrian path after parking at Genova Ovest, from the Dinegro metro stop, or by bus using lines 1 or 18.
A true journey into the city’s thousand‑year history, the Lighthouse of Genoa is an unmissable stop to enjoy a breathtaking sunset view, blending ancient technology with legend.
