HOKUSAI. The Great Master of Japanese Art – Palazzo Bonaparte, Rome

Dates: from 27 March 2026 to 29 June 2026.

This major monographic exhibition dedicated to Katsushika Hokusai at Palazzo Bonaparte is one of the season's standout cultural events. In the weeks following its opening the show has drawn a broad public, praised for both the quality of the works on display and the exhibition design.

Exhibition highlights

  • More than 200 works, including landmark print series such as the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji and The Great Wave off Kanagawa;
  • Over 180 items — rare books and traditional artifacts (lacquers, armors, musical instruments, costumes) that enrich the display;
  • An immersive layout that evokes the Edo period and is supported by informative panels and audiovisual material.

Why visit

The exhibition provides a comprehensive and approachable interpretation of Hokusai's art: monumental landscapes, daily-life scenes and graphic experiments such as his manga. The combination of masterpieces and cultural objects makes the route engaging for diverse audiences, including families and students.

Curators and partners

Curated by Beata Romanowicz in collaboration with the National Museum of Kraków, the project involves cultural institutions, foundations and sponsors who supported the realization of the show.
