Paglicci Cave heads to UNESCO: event in Rignano Garganico on 23 May 2026

On 23 May 2026 Rignano Garganico will hold "Grotta Paglicci – A World Heritage", a full-day event to promote the nomination of Grotta Paglicci for UNESCO World Heritage status. The initiative connects scientific research with local development and tourism.

Why Grotta Paglicci matters

Grotta Paglicci is a major Paleolithic site: it has yielded tens of thousands of artifacts spanning roughly 500,000 to 11,000 years, with evidence of Homo erectus, Neanderthals and modern humans. The cave houses some of Italy's oldest rock paintings and important human remains, supporting its candidacy.

Event programme

  • Morning (from 08:30): guided hiking route leaving from the former gym courtyard in Via Genova. The trail includes an external inspection of Grotta Paglicci, Valle di Ividoro and Grotta degli Spagnoli. Registration required, voluntary contribution of €10 and trekking gear needed.
  • Afternoon (from 17:00): national conference in the auditorium of the former gym, with institutional and scientific talks covering the UNESCO bid, museum reopening and the site's potential economic impact.
  • Awards: presentation of the "Ambassadors of Prehistory" prize to local professionals and businesses promoting the site internationally.
  • Evening (20:00): concert in Via Genova with Red Diamonds and the "Notti Magiche Tribute Band" project; guest artist Rossana Facciorusso.

Speakers and supporters

The conference features institutional representatives and researchers. The initiative receives patronage from regional and local bodies, the Gargano National Park and multiple territorial partners.

Awards and local champions

The "Ambassadors of Prehistory" accolade will recognise seven local figures and businesses — from agricultural producers and bakers to dairy entrepreneurs, tourism operators and creative professionals — who help promote the area's heritage abroad.
