Priamar Fortress – a cultural center between history and nature

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 09:54

History and description

Built by the Republic of Genoa in the 1540s with the aim of controlling Savona, the fortress was enriched over the centuries with new elements, such as additional bastions and the expansion of the inner palaces. From the mid-18th century, it passed into the hands of the Savoy troops, gaining considerable military fame, as Giuseppe Mazzini was imprisoned here. It retained this role until the early 20th century. Structurally, the fortress is accessible from the San Giorgio Gate, which leads into the citadel area, the keep with its parade ground, and the various palaces.

Curiosities

The castle, currently undergoing restoration alongside archaeological excavations aimed at rediscovering its original features, is tied to several legends. Among them, the most famous is that of a hidden treasure in the keep, said to be guarded by an evil spirit haunting the fortress along with many others.

Access

The fortress can be visited free of charge in its outdoor areas, while entry to the museum requires a ticket costing €5.

How to reach it

The fortress can be reached by car via the SS1 road, by train from Savona station, or by local bus lines. Inside the complex, visitors can also move around using elevators.

A vibrant cultural center surrounded by history and nature, the Priamar Fortress is an essential stop on any tour of Liguria!
