Herculaneum: public presentation of student training projects at Villa Campolieto
The Herculaneum Archaeological Park hosted a public presentation marking the conclusion of this year’s School‑Work training program. Held at Villa Campolieto, the event involved students from five local high schools acting as narrators and digital stewards for the UNESCO site.
Presented activities
Student projects combined technical skills and hands‑on practices aimed at enhancing the site's accessibility and interpretation. Key initiatives included:
- 3D surveying and digital documentation using 3D scanners and Matterport technologies;
- Wireless infrastructure mapping within the area to support digital visitor services;
- Conservation and restoration interventions employing photogrammetry and digital cataloguing;
- Cultural mediation and reception proposals: brochures, docu‑films, photo reports and video stories;
- Artistic and multimedia productions inspired by direct observation of ancient Herculaneum.
Training goals and impact
The program turned the site into a practical laboratory where students experienced operational roles in excavation, restoration, welcoming and communication. This approach builds transferable skills for the job market and strengthens ties between the local community and its archaeological heritage, promoting more engaged and informed visitation.
Visits and further insights
The day ended with a guided tour of the exhibition “From egg to apples” at Villa Campolieto, focused on the dietary habits of Herculaneum’s ancient inhabitants. The initiative highlights the Archaeological Park’s educational and participatory role as a space for practical learning.
