1 Million Dollar Donation for Rome's Archaeological Sites

Announcement date: 21 April 2026

A donation of $1,000,000 has been announced in support of Rome's archaeological heritage. Rather than flowing into a single centralized fund, the resources will be assigned directly to professionals, laboratories and operational entities active in the city.

Types of interventions to be funded

  • Archaeological excavations: funding for field campaigns to recover finds and study stratigraphy.
  • Conservation and restoration: interventions on monuments, structures and artefacts at risk of deterioration.
  • Digital documentation: 3D acquisitions, photogrammetry and mapping to create durable, accessible archives.
  • Specialist research: archival studies, stratigraphic analyses and interdisciplinary projects led by universities and research centers.

Practical impact for archaeological sites

Direct allocation of funds aims to speed up operational interventions: from field campaigns to conservation restorations and the digitalization of collections and monumental areas. This model also facilitates the involvement of universities and specialist laboratories already working on site.

What remains unclear and how to follow developments

Specific projects and the list of beneficiaries have not yet been published. For updates on allocations, calls and funded projects, check official announcements from archaeological superintendencies, involved universities and active research centers in Rome.
