History and description
Built starting in the 5th century BC by order of Anassila, tyrant of Reggio, the castle underwent modifications under the rule of various sovereigns until, in the hands of Robert Guiscard, it became a military fortress. During the Renaissance, after also belonging to the King of Naples, it was purchased by Paolo Ruffo, who turned it into a family residence and embellished it with his noble coat of arms. Following earthquake damage, the castle was later rediscovered and restored, becoming one of the best-preserved castles in Calabria. With its irregular plan and typical medieval fortress features, it includes numerous interior rooms—most notably the large halls—and the so-called Lighthouse of Scilla, currently managed by the navy, which offers panoramic views over the Strait of Messina.
Curiosities
Today hosting numerous cultural events, the castle is inseparably linked to the legend of Scylla, the sea monster who, according to Greek mythology, inhabited the waters below and threatened passing ships.
Access
Open daily from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, the fortress can be visited at the cost of €2, with free entry only on the first Sunday of the month.
How to reach it
Located in the center of Scilla, Ruffo Castle can be reached by car via state road 18 with nearby parking, or by train to the central station followed by a short walk.
A unique combination of history, architecture, and mythological legend, Ruffo Castle is a true symbol of the city and an unmissable stop when planning an itinerary!
