Castello d’Alessandro – private residence between history and Baroque art

Autore: Redazione 07/10/2025 22:28

History and description

Located in a dominant position over the village of Pescolanciano, in the heart of Molise, the Castello d’Alessandro rises on a rocky spur that has made it, since antiquity, a strategic and defensive site. Its origins are very ancient: some sources trace its existence back to the 6th century, under Lombard rule, while other scholars suggest a fortified outpost already existed in the time of Charlemagne, around the year 810.

The first certain historical document dates to the 13th century, when Emperor Frederick II ordered the feudal lord Ruggero of Peschio Lanciano to dismantle the fortification for political and military reasons. The castle was later rebuilt, expanded, and transformed over the following centuries, particularly between the 17th and 18th centuries, by the d’Alessandro family, who made it their noble residence.

During this period, the building acquired the features we can admire today: residential quarters alongside military structures, a private chapel, stables, warehouses, defensive posts, and even a drawbridge. In 1805, a violent earthquake struck the area, severely damaging both the castle and the medieval village below. The entrance façade, as we see it today, was rebuilt only in 1849, maintaining the austere and solemn style of the original structure.

Inside, the highlight is the Baroque chapel built in 1628, enriched with stuccoes and marbles, which houses the relics of Saint Alexander, brought to the castle in 1787. Today, the Castello d’Alessandro represents a fascinating example of mixed architecture, combining a medieval fortress with an 18th‑century noble residence, and still preserves original rooms, furnishings, and decorations of the family who lived there for centuries. Part of the complex remains privately owned, while another section has been opened to cultural projects and public use.

Curiosities

Among the curiosities linked to the castle is the presence of the relics of Saint Alexander, kept in an urn inside the private chapel. It was Duke Pasquale Maria d’Alessandro, in the 18th century, who arranged their transfer to strengthen the symbolic bond between the family and religious devotion.

Access

The castle is partially open to visitors, with access by reservation, especially during cultural events, exhibitions, or guided tours organized in the tourist season. Not all areas are accessible, as part of the structure is still inhabited by the d’Alessandro family, who retain private ownership.

How to reach it

The Castello d’Alessandro is located in Pescolanciano, in the province of Isernia, in the heart of Molise. To reach it, take the A1 motorway exit at Isernia and follow the signs to Pescolanciano. Once in the village, the castle is clearly visible from above and can be easily reached on foot from the historic center.

With its imposing presence, medieval roots, and elegant Baroque transformations, the Castello d’Alessandro is a place rich in charm and historical memory: a true jewel of Molise to be discovered slowly, walking among history, art, and silence.
