Montorio Castle – a military fortress steeped in legend

Autore: Redazione 21/08/2025 21:23

History and description

Built starting in the 10th century on earlier structures, Montorio Castle was later expanded mainly by the Scaliger family, who added a fortified bastia. Abandoned during the 18th century, it was restored and made accessible in the last century. The complex includes a castrum and a crenellated bastia, a keep, several corner towers, and numerous defensive terraces castellodimontorio.it.

Curiosities

The castle is surrounded by fascinating legends that enhance its appeal to visitors. Among them is the tale of a secret tunnel said to connect the fortress to Verona’s Arena, the ghost of the castaldo (steward) who returned to avenge his imprisonment, and the Book of Command, a magical text believed to grant any wish and supposedly hidden within the walls. The site is also linked to Florio and Biancofiore, protagonists of a Boccaccian tale, whose remains are said to rest here.

Access

Open daily with varying hours, the castle is generally free to visit, with some exceptions for guided tours and scheduled events that require booking.

How to reach it

Located on the hill of Montorio Veronese, the castle can be reached by car via the A4 motorway toward Verona Est, by train combined with bus (from Verona Porta Nuova station taking lines 13 or 92), or on foot along the Sentiero della Storia (Path of History).

A site outside the usual tourist circuits, Montorio Castle offers a unique experience blending history, nature, mystery, and culture, allowing visitors to enjoy a truly different day.
