Why Orange Flags matter in Sicily

The Orange Flag is an award from the Touring Club Italiano highlighting small inland towns with high-quality hospitality, care for the territory and notable cultural and culinary heritage. Sicily currently has two Orange Flag villages: Petralia Sottana and San Marco d'Alunzio.

Main criteria for the Orange Flag

  • Tourist reception: quality of services, information and hospitality.
  • Heritage enhancement: preservation of historic buildings, cultural routes and museums.
  • Environmental sustainability: respect for landscape and sustainable management practices.
  • Visitor services: signage, transport, accommodation and dining options.
  • Local identity and gastronomy: traditions, typical products and culinary offerings.

Petralia Sottana: in the heart of the Madonie

Located in the Madonie Park at over 1,000 meters above sea level, Petralia Sottana is a medieval jewel with narrow streets, historic churches and panoramic viewpoints. The Mother Church of Maria SS. Assunta overlooks the historic center, while trails lead into forests, chestnut groves and high-altitude meadows.

Things to do and see:

  • Stroll the historic center and visit the Mother Church and smaller chapels.
  • Hike the Madonie Park trails—routes are available for families and experienced walkers.
  • Taste local products: Madonie cheeses, cured meats, mushroom dishes and traditional sweets.

How to get there: by car from Palermo it's roughly 1 hour 30 minutes; from Catania around 2 hours, following scenic roads up to the Madonie.

San Marco d'Alunzio: history and views in the Nebrodi

Perched on the Nebrodi hills, San Marco d'Alunzio preserves Greek, Roman and medieval traces. The village hosts over twenty churches, the Norman Castle ruins with sweeping views and vistas that in clear weather reach the Tyrrhenian coast and the Aeolian Islands.

Things to do and see:

  • Visit the Church of San Teodoro and Santa Maria in Ara Coeli.
  • Climb to the Norman Castle area for broad views of the landscape.
  • Attend local festivals and summer cultural events when scheduled.

How to get there: from Messina or the A20 Messina–Palermo motorway, exit at Sant'Agata di Militello and follow signs inland; travel times are about 1 hour 30 minutes from Messina and up to 2 hours from Palermo depending on traffic.

Best times to visit and practical tips

  • Spring and autumn: ideal for hiking and enjoying scenery without summer heat.
  • Summer: lively with patron saint festivals, food fairs and cultural programs.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for cobbled streets and hilly paths; check visiting hours for churches and monuments.

Both villages offer an authentic taste of inland Sicily: history, nature and traditional flavors combine to create memorable stops for travelers seeking genuine Italian borgo experiences away from mass tourism.
