Balsamic Vinegar of Modena: Consortium launches UNESCO intangible heritage nomination

The Consorzio Tutela Aceto Balsamico di Modena IGP has announced its intention to prepare a nomination for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The project will be developed in collaboration with other local consortia, confraternities and institutions.

According to the consortium's president, the nomination rests on the product's deep territorial roots and long-standing cultural practices that engage families and local communities. Preparing the dossier will require detailed documentation and time.

  • Proponents: Consorzio Tutela Aceto Balsamico di Modena IGP, together with the Traditional Balsamic consortia of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
  • Territorial roots: production methods and customs widespread across Modena and Reggio Emilia, with strong family involvement.
  • Key figures: about 6,000 families involved in home production; the product is also a significant export item, with the majority of output sold abroad.
  • Goal: cultural recognition and enogastronomic tourism development, following successful examples of other Italian products.

For visitors, the nomination could open up opportunities to explore traditional production techniques, attend local events such as the Palio di San Giovanni, and visit aging cellars and dedicated museums. Administratively, the consortium stresses that the process will be lengthy and requires careful coordination among stakeholders.

If successful, UNESCO recognition may enhance the touristic appeal of the Modena area, strengthen the collective identity of producers and support promotion and protection initiatives for the balsamic tradition.
